I was asked to participate in our latest Health & Safety training course last month, a new one which we have just begun offering to clients, the Health & Safety in the Workplace Level 3 course. I was asked to take part to enable me to conduct some office based risk assessments around our own office. The course lasted three days long and the number of delegates was just under ten, so we all got a lot of attention and guidance from Peter, our trainer.
This is the third course I have been on with CoLaw, and it was by far the most interesting, with Peter letting us have a bit of fun, but throwing us questions all the time making sure we knew what Health & Safety was all about. Day two was perhaps the most interesting, with a practical risk assessment exercise around the site where the training course was held looking for hazards and methods to control them. It gave us a chance to put what we had learned straight into practice, and really drove the theory home.
On day three we sat an exam, but prior to that we all had an informal pop quiz chaired by Peter, who really got us fired up and having fun, but ensuring that the knowledge he had given us was driven home and would stay with us long after the course had finished. The exam itself was almost like a walk in the park thanks to Peter, he had given us the tools and knowledge to answer the questions.
After the training course I was asked by Mike to conduct an access and egress risk assessment on the office, and unsurprisingly whilst there were a few potential hazards, the risk from them was so low that I couldn’t possibly conceive of any control methods that could reduce the risk further. So both myself and Mike were satisfied that the risk was as low as reasonably practicable.
Jamie.
