As well as being a legal duty, a risk assessment is an important step in protecting your workers, and your business. It helps to find out where the important risks are within your business to help you aim to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.
In most instances a straightforward, simple, and cheap solution will be readily available to protect your workforce. The law does not require risk to be removed completely, but only “as far as is reasonably practicable”.
A risk assessment is simply an examination of what you do in your workplace, and how they can cause harm, so that you can see if there are enough precautions in place to protect your workforce, or if more precautions need to be taken.
There are five simple steps to risk assessment:
- Identify the hazards
- Decide who might be harmed and how
- Evaluate the risks and decide on precaution
- Record your findings and implement them
- Review your assessment and update if necessary
In all cases you should involve your staff in the process; they will have useful information about how the job is done.
